Q&A: Kiln-dried firewood
What is the moisture content of your firewood, and why does it matter?
Tammaru Farm firewood is kiln-dried to 10–15% moisture and ready to burn. Moisture is checked before packing. Wet wood uses part of its heat to evaporate water, smoulders and produces smoke and tar, which blacken the chimney and the fireplace glass (UK Forest Research).
Why is kiln-dried firewood better?
At 10–15% moisture, the firewood stays free of mould if stored in a dry place, and it does not hiss when burning, because there is no water in the wood to escape as steam. Dry wood burns down completely, gives more heat and leaves less soot in the chimney and on the fireplace glass. Well-dried wood has about twice the heating value of freshly cut wood (UK Forest Research). Dry logs are also lighter to lift.
Which wood should I choose — birch, alder or black alder?
Per kilogram, all wood types give practically the same heat (VTT: 4.00–4.15 kWh/kg at 20% moisture). Birch is denser, so a stacked cubic metre contains more heat: according to VTT, about 1700 kWh for birch and about 1230 kWh for alder. Alder is lighter and cheaper. Black alder is slightly denser and heavier than alder, but a 40 L bag stays in the same weight range: 12 kg ±1 kg. All three are suitable for cookers, stoves, fireplaces and sauna stoves.
Which firewood do customers order most?
Tammaru Farm customers most often order black alder. It is slightly denser than alder and cheaper than birch: a 40 L bag costs €5.25, compared with €6.00 for birch and €5.15 for alder. Customers also like its smell: of our wood types, only black alder smells of roasted wood when it comes out of the kiln, and it gives a similar light aroma when burning. All three wood types are suitable for cookers, stoves, fireplaces and sauna stoves.
Is birch more expensive than alder?
Per bag, yes; per kilogram, no. In a 40 L bag, alder and birch both cost about €0.43 per kilogram, because the birch bag is heavier (14 kg vs 12 kg). Since all wood types give practically the same heat per kilogram (VTT: 4.00–4.15 kWh/kg), you get the same heat for the same money with birch — just in fewer bags.
Which wood types and log lengths are available?
Alder, black alder (Alnus glutinosa) and birch. Alder and birch come in 25, 30 and 40 cm, black alder in 30 and 40 cm. 25 cm logs come in 20 L, 30 cm logs in 40 L and 40 cm logs in 60 L mesh bags. Only straight logs without rot are packed into the bags.
What are your firewood prices?
Warehouse prices range from €3.15 (25 cm alder, 20 L mesh bag) to €9.70 (40 cm birch, 60 L mesh bag). All prices include VAT. For delivery, transport is added; its cost depends on the quantity, distance and access.
How many mesh bags are in one stacked cubic metre?
Tammaru Farm sells firewood in mesh bags at a price per bag, not per cubic metre. Loose firewood is usually sold by the stacked cubic metre. You can still compare quantities: one stacked cubic metre is 1 m³ of stacked logs, or about 1000 litres. This equals approximately 50 × 20 L bags (25 cm logs), 25 × 40 L bags (30 cm logs) or 16.7 × 60 L bags (40 cm logs). The calculation assumes the bags are stacked tightly side by side.
How much does a bag of firewood weigh?
Tammaru Farm fills 20 L and 40 L mesh bags by weight, the same way as for export packing, so each bag contains the same amount. 20 L bag: alder about 6 kg (±0.5 kg), birch about 7 kg (±0.5 kg). 40 L bag: alder and black alder about 12 kg (±1 kg), birch about 14 kg (±1 kg). 60 L bags are not filled by weight; their estimated weight is about 18 kg for alder and black alder and about 21 kg for birch.
What is the minimum purchase?
The minimum purchase from the warehouse is 12 units. In one order you can combine different log lengths and bag sizes and add wood briquettes and cow manure — together with other products, 1 bag of cow manure is enough.
How can I pay?
Payment is in cash on delivery or when collecting from the warehouse. Card payment is not available. The amount is agreed in advance by phone, based on log length, bag size, quantity and delivery address.
Do you deliver firewood to my home, and how quickly?
Yes. Tammaru Farm delivers firewood in Tallinn and Harju County, usually within 1–3 working days, and at weekends when possible, by prior arrangement. The transport cost depends on the quantity, distance and access and is agreed before the order is confirmed. In winter, we agree in advance whether the vehicle can reach the unloading place in snow and ice.
Can I collect firewood from the warehouse myself?
Yes. Our Tallinn warehouse is at Veerme 23 (on the Nõmme border) and is open every day, Mon–Sun, by prior arrangement. When you collect, you pay only the warehouse price, with no transport cost. The minimum purchase is 12 units (firewood bags, briquette packs and cow manure bags combined). To plan your car or trailer load: a 40 L bag weighs about 12 kg for alder and black alder and about 14 kg for birch.
Where can I buy dry firewood in Tallinn?

How much firewood do I need for the winter, and how much should I order?
It depends on the size of the house, insulation, the stove and whether wood is your main or extra heating. To estimate the quantity: 1 stacked cubic metre is about 50 × 20 L, 25 × 40 L or 16.7 × 60 L bags.
How much firewood should I put in the stove at one time?
For a heat-storing masonry stove, VTT recommends about 1 kg of firewood per 100 kg of stove weight per heating. For example, a 1500 kg stove needs about 15 kg of firewood — roughly one 40 L birch bag (14 kg) or a little more than one 40 L alder bag (12 kg). You can split this into two loads, for example 9 kg and 6 kg, so that the firebox does not overheat. Read more: Firewood heat values and stove efficiency.
Is this firewood suitable for a sauna stove?
Yes, Tammaru Farm kiln-dried firewood is suitable for cookers, stoves, fireplaces and sauna stoves.
